After visiting 25 US national parks, I've fallen in love with some lesser-known locations. I love visiting Colorado's Mesa Verde National Park, which is home to 800-year-old cliff dwellings. I've also enjoyed my time in Alaska's Denali National Park and Florida's Everglades National Park. The good news is many of these lesser-known national parks are just as spectacular as the big names. ON BOARD THE USS BATAAN (AP) — When attacks with missiles and drones surged in the Red Sea late last year, crewmembers of the USS Bataan worked round the clock to make sure they were shot down before reaching passing merchant vessels. Weeks later, they are still perfecting that operation in training and simulations, along with a dozen other scenarios, despite moving north to the Mediterranean where commercial marine traffic is at little risk. The U.S. Navy is reshuffling its warship deployment in the Middle East to maintain dominance in the region – now eyeing the longer haul as concerns mount that Israel’s war on Hamas in Gaza could set off a regional conflict. The Bataan was sailing toward the eastern Mediterranean Friday after taking part in live-fire exercises with NATO-member Greece on the country’s mainland. “I would say, the difference (after coming to Greece) is that the food is a little bit better.”

On Tuesday, more ships and forces were heading toward Israel, and other troops in the U.S. were preparing to deploy if called on. The buildup reflects growing U.S. concern that the deadly fighting between Hamas and Israel will escalate into wider regional conflict. The Pentagon has said those troops are not participating in any hostage rescues and there are no other U.S. military forces on the ground in Israel. AND MORE TROOPS ARE GETTING READYAustin ordered about 2,000 U.S. forces to be prepared to deploy if needed in the coming days and weeks. She said the troops would be able to respond quickly, particularly to provide intelligence and surveillance, transportation and medical assistance.

☆ Baltic Sea drills to focus for first time on repelling Russian attack

BERLIN, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Major naval drills about to start in the Baltic Sea involving some 30 ships and more than 3,000 Western service members will for the first time practice how to respond to a Russian assault in the region, Germany's navy chief said on Friday. Securing the sea routes through the Baltic Sea is another focus of the exercise that will take place off the coasts of Latvia and Estonia. "Finland and the Baltic states depend to almost 100% on the maritime supply routes through the Baltic Sea," Kaack noted. The Suwalki Gap, a narrow land corridor of some 65 kilometres (40 miles), is the only connection linking the Baltic states to Poland and NATO's main territory in Europe. Germany aims to provide the facility to NATO as a regional maritime headquarters, capable of leading the alliance's operations in the Baltic Sea in case of a conflict.

CNN —Three US Marines who died when their Osprey aircraft crashed during a military exercise in Australia have been identified by their unit.
